The story behind The Serpent and the Rainbow is an utterly fascinating one. The film was based on a 1985 non-fiction book by Canadian-born Wade Davis. A Harvard anthropologist travels to Haiti in search of the toxic drug that may be the source of the zombie myth. But he soon stumbles into a world of real life voodoo. If The Serpent and the Rainbow had been made by a ‘serious’ director and not a talented one who’d worked their way up from the indie horror scene, I’m sure it would be held in much higher regard.
